ANANTHARAM
Monologue

Adoor Gopala Krishnan
1987

Story/Screenplay: Adoor Gopala Krishnan
Camera: Ravi Varma
Starring: Ashokan, Sudheesh, Sooraj, Mammootty, Shonbana, N B. Thampi, B K Nair, Vempayam

Anantharam explores the fine line between truth and perception, in the persona of a disturbed young man, Ajayan (played by Ashokan). He tells his story; he then retells it from a different perspective. And we realize that both these are valid interpretations of some objective 'truth'. In fact, is there anything but subjective realities?

Adoor always looks for actors who can portray his characters. Ashokan was the main character in Anantharam, but he needed another actor as his elder brother. This elder brother was better than the main character in looks, profession and in real life. So Adoor's search was not just for an actor, but an attractive and imposing person -- physically and personality-wise. Adoor's choice was Mammootty.
